Harry Callahan now has superiors to back him up, even though he is the target of a mob hit for throwing a crime boss in prison. Harry is also on a betting pool being devised by B movie director Peter Swann (Liam Neeson) that consists of celebrities who will likely die within a short time. Compounding Harry's problems is an ambitious TV newscaster who wants to write his biography. A series of murders begins to take place involving names on the "Dead Pool", including a has-been rock star (Jim Carrey), a hostile film critic, and a talk show host (Bay Area radio personality Bill Wattenburg). Harry suspects Swann, but later finds others who may or may not be involved, including a psycho who will set himself on fire if he does not get to be on TV. An obssesive and mentally disturbed fan of Peter Swann turns out to be the guilty party to get revenge for Swann's refusal to film a screenplay he has submitted. His next victim is Harry himself. As much of a top flight thriller as the orginal "Dirty Harry".
