Serge meets Hélène on a Paris street; she has just broken with her dentist lover, Raoul, a philanderer. Serge takes Hélène to a restaurant and later contrives to have her invite him to her apartment. Werther escorts Sophie to Raoul, who takes advantage of her defenseless position in the dentist's chair to seduce her. For her part, Sophie asks Raoul to drive her to see her ex-husband, telling him that she is visiting her cousin. While he waits restlessly in his car for Sophie, Raoul sees Mathilde, who is sitting in her car next to his in the middle of a traffic jam. Raoul speeds off after Mathilde just as Sophie is about to enter his car. His first encounter with Mathilde is a fiasco, since she is as ruthless a lover as he, and his confidence is shaken. He shows her films of his past conquests, including Hélène and Sophie, and assures her that he loves her. On another day, a new conquest finds herself watching films of Mathilde.
