In Nazi-occupied Paris in 1944, wealthy Thérèse Dutheil is oblivious to the hardships and sufferings brought on by war. Her husband, an officer, has been captured by the Germans, and Thérèse lives in an elegant apartment with her two young daughters. After a trip to a country farm to obtain food, Thérèse returns to Paris with the farmer's son and discovers that three Allied soldiers are hidden in their truck. When the farmer's son disappears, Thérèse, furious at becoming involved, leads the soldiers to a Resistance hideout. Because there isn't room for them all, she is forced to hide American Capt. Allen Morley in her home. When the Resistance sends Allen on an escape route to the Spanish border, Thérèse accompanies him. Along the way a Gestapo agent attempts to arrest him, and they are arrested by local police at Toulouse, but they are allowed to escape because the police chief realizes that this act will place him in a good position with the Allies. Now deeply in love, Allen and Thérèse bicycle to the border. Allen's request that Thérèse be allowed to accompany him to freedom is refused, and he is forced to leave before saying goodby to her. Unable to return to Paris, Thérèse decides to remain at the border to aid other escaping Allied soldiers. As she enters Resistance headquarters, a radio announces the date--6 June 1944.
