At New York's Mitchell Memorial Hospital, Dr. Tony Halliday is near collapse from nervous exhaustion. While he is treating a poor Italian child, the hospital's patron, John Mitchell, brings in his daughter. Tony angers Mitchell by operating on his daughter after the Italian, and when the girl later dies of thrombosis, Mitchell accuses Tony of negligence, which causes him to quit. Then Tony's fiancée Carol Elder tells him that she does not want to be engaged to a doctor who works at a clinic. Tony leaves in shock and contracts amnesia. After wandering aimlessly, Tony, using the name John Davis, finds employment at the Crocker Steel Works in Scranton, PA. One day an accident occurs at the steel works and Tony enters the company's hospital and instinctively takes over. Later, Tony meets mill school teacher Greta, who is daughter of Joe Kosovic, a steel worker. When Greta sees some children playing the "steel game," dropping bricks on people, Joe guesses that the recent spate of accidents were caused by a rival who wants to take over the plant. Brant, who has been paid by a rival mill for sabotage, blames the accidents on Tony. Brant's son, Danny, is injured when he follows his father to the mill and must be immediately operated on by Tony. When Brant learns this, he sacrifices his life to prevent the detonation of the works. Tony's old friends see his picture in the newspaper and recognize him, but he refuses to return to New York, preferring to remain with Greta.
