Jean Webster's play was based on her own novel, published in New York in 1912, which consists entirely of letters written from "Judy" to "Daddy Long Legs." Ruth Chatterton starred in the original play. According to information in the Twentieth Century-Fox Produced Scripts Collection at the UCLA Theater Arts Library, Fox produced French and Italian dubbed versions of this film. The French version was entitled Papa longues jambes. According to Variety, in 1938, Twentieth Century-Fox sued a Dutch company, Neerlandia-Cinetone, for violation of its rights when it made a film based on the same source entitled Vadertje Langbeen, which was directed by Friedrich Zelnick and starred Lily Bouwmeester. Other films made from the same source include the 1919 Mary Pickford Co. film, distributed by First National Exhibitors' Circuit, directed by Marshall Neilan and starring Mary Pickford, Mahlon Hamilton and Neilan (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1911-20; F1.0885); the 1935 Fox film entitled Curly Top, directed by Irving Cummings and starring Shirley Temple; and the 1955 Twentieth Century-Fox musical directed by Jean Negulesco and starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron.
