Sir Michael Redgrave and Bette Davis
There are 3 main characters in this film: Wanda Fleming (Bette Davis), James Wallraven (Sir Michael Redgrave) & Mickey Hollister (Alexis Kanner). Wanda's a lonely musician who lives in a delapidated boarding house. Mickey lives downstairs trying to become a music writer. Professor James Wallraven lives next door to Wanda, separated only by a connecting door, like in some hotels. Wanda lost the lover of her life. Mickey's using "Princess" (his name for Wand) for anything her can weasel out of her. He's bent on being famous. Professor Wallraven's unfairly jobless due to a student's false claim that he made sexual advances toward them. So ashamed of what's happened, Wallraven's secretive about it and laying low by living there. Wanda recognizes James is miserable and befriends him. As their friendship blossoms, Wanda dumps Mickey. Wanda and James are drawn to each other. James wants to hear her perform. Ti his surprise, Wanda's got a skeleton in her closet too. The performances of Bette Davis and Sir Michael are incredibly fine. They do not get better than this.
Brief Synopsis: Davis & Sir Michael
(I tried to post this synopsis and cast update but the softward isn't working). James Wallraven (Sir Michael Redgrave) is a schoolmaster. Even though Wallraven's been unjustly accused, the school adminstration dismissed him for alleged sexual misconduct with a student. Feeling utterly disgraced by this career catastrophe, Wallraven's life sinks into a depressed state. He lives in a run down rooming house that's out of the way. He wants to keep the school accusation a secret. His home is like a hide out. There, he meets an introverted cellist, Wanda Fleming (Bette Davis). Fleming's the central character and Davis has the leading role. Wallraven and Fleming develop a limited relationship.Fleming's music student is Mickey Hollister (Alexis Kanner), a bedraggled but handsome young song writer who's anxious to become famous. Hollister's lusty for Fleming, who's older than him and less than attractive. After Hollister becomes very jealous about Fleming's and Wallraven's relationship, he discloses Wallraven's secret as if he was tried and found guilty. Hollister fails to mention that Wallraven's been falsely accused.
