Sheriff Jed Martin and his posse chase a lone rider on a calico horse through the hills. The rider escapes to a wooded area where he has another horse waiting. After changing his hat and coat, the rider sends the calico horse off with a money bag and meets the sheriff, who recognizes him as Tom Wade, also known as Cheyenne Tommy. The sheriff has determined that the man had been mixed up with three rustling outfits in Wyoming, but had always been able to get off because of an alibi. Tom denies knowledge of the rider, who robbed the stage of $10,000 belonging to cattle buyer Dave Gleason. The sheriff takes his men to search Tom's barn, where Tom's sidekick, Dopey Andrews, has washed the spots from the calico horse and hidden the money and Tom's clothes. Girard, a member of the posse, finds the bucket Dopey used to wash the horse and then the hidden clothes, but says nothing to the sheriff. He gets his own men and returns, and after discovering that Tom is really a representative of the Cattlemen's Protective Association investigating money made from stolen cattle, he threatens to shoot Tom if he does not hand over the hidden money. Tom escapes and rides with Dopey to town, where he reveals his identity to the sheriff. Gleason, who is really running a front for a rustling gang, arranges to bring Rollin, the boss of the gang, to Tom's home to make a deal for the return of the money. Meanwhile, Sally Lane, who is working undercover as Rollin's assistant to try to trap the rustlers, is suspected by Rollin, who also desires her. Learning that Sally is in danger, Tom sneaks into Rollin's house and confers with her. He then makes a deal with Rollin to return the money for ten percent of it and a job in his outfit, but Girard and his men arrive and reveal Tom's identity. During a fight, Tom is knocked out and then tied up. Dopey sneaks in and unties Tom, who then rescues Sally and knocks out Rollin. Tom, Sally and Dopey escape chased by Rollin's men. After leaping onto an overhanging tree limb, Tom jumps the last rider of the gang and then engages the others in a fight until the sheriff and his posse arrive. On the ride back to town, Tom tells Sally that this is her last case because the service will not hire married women. She is pleased that he has finally gotten around to proposing, as he takes her hand.
