Kirk Douglas Is Outstanding in "Champion"!
Have always loved Kirk Douglas as an actor, but it's "Champion" in particular where he hits the real knockout performance of his career (no pun intended). The entire movie actually gets an A with a supporting cast including Arthur Kennedy, Ruth Roman, Marilyn Maxwell & Lola Albright, just to name a few. Amongst the many great films of its time, "Champion" is a true standout!
"in this corner.."
- Richard Godfrey
I like this film..it reminds me of great fighters like Ray Robinson, Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano...I was around to see them and loved watching them..
One of Kirk Douglas's best performances.
Rocky Balboa has nothing on the champion. While Rocky is a lovable oaf, Kirk Douglas's champion is a bitter driven man who rises to the top by sheer force of will, gets sidetracked by frame and then redeems himself at the end-Going out as a Champion. This movie used to be played on the 4:30 Movie in NYC back in the 1960s. I grew up watching it and was mesmerized by Kirk Douglas performance. You could feel the rage coming through the black and white Motorola TV. One of the best fight films made and one of Mr. Douglas best performances.
Kirk is Magnificent
Terrific, realistic film, with an absolutely stellar performance by Kirk Douglas. The man is truly mesmerizing here. Arthur Kennedy (an under-appreciated actor) is very good as well, and Ruth Roman is lovely. Very much on par with other great boxing dramas, like "Body and Soul," "The Set-Up," and "Golden Boy." Kirk Douglas fans and boxing film fans won't want to miss this.
