What Were They Thinking...?(1970)
Rarely does a title of a movie so aptly describe the subject of the film. But, "Captain Nemo and the Underwater City" does just that. This film is ambitious in its' attempt to display some great sets, and period costumes with grand design and scale. The special effects have merit, but sadly, time has doomed them to something less than state-of-the-art. Capt. Nemo(Robert Ryan) has built a city 40,000 fanthoms unders the sea. Now, a fanthom is a unit of measure of six feet. That would make the city a little more than 45 miles under the surface of the ocean.Really ?o.k. If the suspension of dibelief hasn't set in by now, it probably won't, and that is why this film fails. It can't get past its' own barriers. Silly subplots, scary sea monsters, and the eternal self-detruction of man are ever prevalent. The casting is peculiar to say the least. Take the most earthy actor on screen Robert Ryan, face him against Chuck(Rifleman) Connors, and add Luciana Paluzzi and you get the oddest menage-a-trois in the history of film. Uggh... This British film seems as if it was trying to put its' own spin on the Jules Verne vehicle,Disney doing it in the 1950's. It just doesn't work, plus the lack of drama only adds to the disappointment. I wish it wouild have worked. Special effects were in the doldrums during this period of time, and the real good stuff, hadn't arrived yet. 2 stars out of 5 . No lessons learned here, well, maybe one, don't make another film like this. Most films fail becuase they don't respect the audience, and this film is one of them.
Captain Nemo tries to run underwater city.
This film's variation of Jules Verne's stories of dementedsea captain/scientist and inventor"Captain Nemo"has theangry marriner running an underwater city and forcing somesurvivors or a shipwreck becoming the citizens of his oceanShangrila. The plot is fair..but the performances by Robert Ryan,ChuckConnors and the supporting cast is enjoyable.
