  One major flaw is Cortez should have blond hair and blue eyes.

  This epic adventure was filmed on location in Mexico in fabulous technicolor and is a genuine gem. A period piece with a most interesting topic: The conquest of the New World in the midst of the Spanish inquisition. It's Jean Peters' first film, and once you see it you might agree with me that she is one of the most gorgeous creatures to hit the Hollywood screen -plus she does a great acting job for someone who'd never acted before. No wonder she became an overnight sensation and stole the heart of the richest man in America, Howard Hughes (although it's said that in real life Jean loathed luxury and glamour). The film has heavy action, suspense, romance, swashbuckling sequences, vigorous adventure and great chase scenes on horseback. Power and Peters run away from fatherland Spain and the injustices of a vicious inquisition. They join Hernan Cortez (Cesar Romero) and his expedition, aimed at discovering riches in unkown territory in Mexico. They also discover love. As hundreds of men make their way into an uncharted land, never before seen by European eyes, they encounter great danger and life threatening situations that arise from encounters with the Aztecs, the Mayans, some of Cortez' ambitious officers and the evil man (John Sutton) they'd escaped from back in the Old World; a horrible human being, who accused Power's young sister of being involved in witchcraft -though without a shred of evidence- and had her tortured and murdered in the name of the Santa Hermandad (Saintly Brotherhood). However, a confrontation with his despicable foe, who joins the Spanish crusade in the New World, may kill Power's chances of becoming a Captain in Cortez' army. Brilliant color and cinematography, a masterful direction by Henry King, great acting and one of Hollywood's best musical scores by the one and only Alfred Newman make this one of the most entertaining films Hollywood's ever offered. A true classic!

  Cinematically beautiful. Backgrounds are done on location of actual historical spots. A great story with many references to actual historical events. Well-paced. I give it a 5 star rating, because it held me enrapt for the entire two and a half hours.
