Jackie, daughter of widower John Leeds, an East African game warden, receives as a pet the small bushbaby Komba. As the Leedses board a ship to return to England, Jackie learns that she cannot take her pet. When she leaves the liner to restore the animal to its habitat, the ship departs without her. Jackie is found beside the dock by Tembo, the Leeds' black servant. She dissuades him from calling the police, preferring to visit a family friend. Upon arriving, however, they find his home deserted. Jackie's disappearance having been detected, the police assume her abduction by Tembo and launch a manhunt for the innocent black. The Hadj, a local ivory poacher fearing discovery during the police investigation, commands his minions to kill Tembo. Overtaken by the henchmen, Jackie is accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow and sinks into a coma. The fugitives, however, are found by Professor Crankshaw, who gives Jackie an antidote. Unwilling to risk her life in the professor's ancient airplane, Tembo takes Jackie to the land of Masai. When the police locate the pair in a hut, they plan Tembo's execution. Although Tembo is wounded by their bullets, Leeds arrives in time to save the black from further harm.
