  • The Brave One - Wonderful Film

I watched "The Brave One" (1956) Tuesday night 6/19/12 as part of TCM's salute to screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, one of the notorious "Hollywood Ten" who was blacklisted by HUAC in the late 40's after he refused to name others in the entertainment industry with alleged Communist ties. Unable to work in the U.S., he moved to Mexico and wrote this story of a boy named Leonardo (charmingly played by young Michel Ray), his love for his pet bull named Gitano, and Leonardo's struggle to save Gitano from being killed at the bullfights by getting a letter from the Mexican President prohibiting Gitano from going into the ring. The final scene when Leonardo and Gitano walk out of the ring together is one of the most touching I've ever seen. "The Brave One" is one of the very few RKO films to made in both color and Cinemascope. I guess there are some who would consider this film somewhat allegorical and symbolic - Trumbo (Gitano the bull) fighting against HUAC (the Matadors) who are trying to kill him. But I enjoy "The Brave One" simply as a wonderful Kids/Animals film. The credits state that Robert Rich wrote the story, as that was the pseudonym that Trumbo was writing under at the time. When he was awarded the Oscar for best screenplay in 1957 as Robert Rich, nobody knew it was really Trumbo, so technically it went to a non-existent person. It wasn't until 1975 that AMPAS awarded the unclaimed statuette to Trumbo with his name on it, correcting way too late one of the most tragic oversights in Oscar history.

Pretty amazing story about background to the writer of this movie Mr.Turnbough. after being blacklisted from Hollywood he was forced to write this academy award winning film under the pseudonym Mr.Riches. It seems only fitting thatTMC further add insult to his familyby not putting his real name in the credits here. But as they say, if you own something then you have the right to colorize itor heck even change the credits.

This is one of my very favorite movies. It is a special and endearing story about the bond between a young boy and his pet. He raised the newborn calf only to have it taken away after becoming a fine bull. Suspense builds as the young boy fights to save his beloved friend from sure death in the bull ring.I highly recommend this awesome story. I will never get tired of seeing this special movie, good for young and old alike.
