An excellent drama about the real-life community concieved by Father Edward Flanagan. Tracy won his second Oscar as Flanagan, Rooney is amazing in his first dramatic role. The story is engaging with a few cheesy "Aww" moments. An excellent drama about an extraordinary man, and any "Catholic priest & children" jokes here is in bad taste. I give it a 4.5/5.

This film is a relic in many ways, including the fact that many years ago Hollywood essentially ceased celebrating the life and/or life's work of great individuals who possessed and promoted traditional values. Even though the always good Tracy won Best Actor for his fine Father Flanagan, 1938's "Boys Town" is Rooney's film. His Whitey Marsh is larger than life. 5'2" Mickey played him like a pocket rocket, and the poignant portrayal helped project him to the top of Tinsel Town. Mickey Rooney was the #1 Box Office Star of 1939, 1940, and 1941.

The story starts by explaining how poor neglected kids and uneducated and unemployed adults are at the end of their rope. No parents, no work. Movie was made in 1938 and the story could read as if it was made in 2012. Nothing has really changed much. No work, no education and parents and adults who do not care. The acting is fantastic, all the ragmuffin kids are cute and it is a marvelous script. Cannot help seeing it over and over again.

This movie drama written by Mr.Dore Schary doesn't tell the true story of Father Ed Flannegan's efforts to create a better enviroment for wayward boys in Depression era America. It does however show us his efforts to create a better enviroment for some wayward boys and helping out one troubled kid.A fine script and a memorable Oscar winning performance from Spencer Tracy.

This very loved classic is definitely a good film, but never quite thought of it to be among the best of the classics. It is so overly sentimental, and Mickey Rooney is just too extreme in his role. Spencer Tracy is excellent however. Good but a bit sappy.
