  • The Boys in the Band (1970)

Biting drama whose stage roots are clearly evident. Rather claustrophobic. The acting is excellent. The writing is good, as is the direction by Friedkin. Intense, unpleasant at times but well worth watching.

I saw this movie when it was first released. I was in my 3rd year of college. I remember how I felt about the characters and how gutsy Mart Crowley writing was and Billy F. directing it. I saw it on TMC last year and taped it to my DVR. Unfortunately I had a problem with my DVR later on and lost it..Where is the DVD would be my ? I have to also respond to the post made by Simone. I too looked up the actors as I wondered where they were and except for 2 all but one died of aids and one of cancer. That made me sad.. I do remember seeing Cliff Gorman on Broadway in Lenny.

  • One that has lived in those NYC gay days

I must say when the film opened in NYC I was only 14 years old back then due to the rating I had to be with an adult and my Dad wouldn't take me. I didn't see that film until it ran on a PBT station in Miami and I was 35 years old. I was amazed how bold a gay film could be and how strong the story could have affected my life. One note to all who reads this the young guys today. In the 60's and 70's had many gay films (not so pleasant but realistic story lines). Well thanks for letting me vent. :O)

  • Need for more gay history movies

I had no idea that gay-themed movies were made that early. More gay movies from the past need to be shown, if they're out there. Everything gay-themed today has to be cool/cutesy/, but the gay plight in history is not so cutesy.I have written a novel that includes the "Stonewall Riots" of 1969 juxtaposed with growing up gay in rural America, but cannot find a publisher. That is a shame, because gay history is relative to gay culture today--the gay stories of the past fought for the "cutesy" gay stories that are the present.

  • What an amazing film

It really should be released on DVD. Sadly, I looked up all the actors in The Boys in the Band and most died from AIDS related illnesses. That honestly makes me really, really sad.

  • WHEN?

This was truly the beginning of "bitchy" dialogue in films! "All About Eve" fails to pack the same amount of punch that "Boys In The Band" has! Lines from this movie are still in popular culture today! "Who does someone have to f*ck to get a drink around here?" Absolutely one of the best, most groundbreaking films ever made to still not be availble on DVD! I saw at the end of a documentary about groundbreaking cinema that "CBS Inc." owns the copyright to this film. Bootlegs of this on DVD are floating around but I want the real thing, remastered with audio commentary! Criterion are you listening!
