One of Best
This is an excellent movie. While not actual film noir, it has elements of it and is better. Mystery, suspense, humor, romance and road trip to Mexico in 1949. What more could you want? Mitchum, Greer and Bendix are all excellent. Don Siegal showed his future talent with this one. This should be released on DVD (NOT Blue-Ray) separately or as a set with His Kind of Woman or Out of the Past or Macao. Previously released on DVD with Illegal (Edward G. Robinson) which was not a good fit. No longer available apparently.
Stike Like a King Cobra
This is a pretty good film. The first punch Mitchum throws is like a striking king cobra - I have never seen such fast reflexes, amazing! It also has a surprise ending, but then the ending ending is too cliche romantic. I do wish it had a better ending ending.
A terrific film that moves across the screen like a fast convertible on an open Mexican road. Greer plays a subdued, cynical character here, perfectly matched with Mitchum's drowsy, but swift-moving, man with a mission. I can't get enough of it, and appreciate that TCM replays the best of the best in film noir.
The Big Steal

Great family oldie black and white movie. I only wish these reviews were read by some one at TCM,because then maybe TCM might start playing some of the truly great old movies instead of the SAME OLD MOVIES over and over again.Or maybe some of the viewing public would get to pick some movies to watch once in awhile. Thanks for having this review area so we might get to vent some frustration about your movie selections. Constant TCM viewer Larry Winn, Poolesville, Md
Best Mitchum movie - EVER
Best movie Robert Mitchum ever made. Much better than Out of the Past. Jane Greer is much better than any of the other actresses they tried to get for the movie. William Bendix delivers an excellent performance. Just the right touch of film noir, mystery, romance and comedy.Too bad it is not available as a stand alone DVD or in a set wtih Out of the Past, Macao or His Kind of Woman.
Best movie ever
Probably the best movie Robert Mitchum ever made. Perfect blend of comedy and film noir. Jane Greer is much better in this than in Out of the Past, but it is a different type role. Ironically, Mitchum appears to be the least "bright" of the characters in the movie. Jane Greer has the best lines. Can watch this movie over and over. Great dialogue, great locations and great cast. Some plot contivances, but heh it's a movie.
The Big Steal (1949)
- Jay Higgins
Incredible dialogue, fast paced and snappy. The performances from Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer are excellent. Always interesting, very well photographed. William Bendix gives excellent support. A fine film noir.
a real sleeper , A-1
This is a very entertaining film on several levels. It teases you by hinting at noir themes, but its really more an adventure/ romantic film with some laughs thrown in for good measure. Considering the termoil in Mitchum's personal life at the time, this film must have been a welcome distraction. He and Jane Greer had such good chemistry, they should have worked together often. This film offers a good contrast to Out of the Past and other Mitchum noir capers. And the chase sequences are terrific; they beat today's computer generated garbage by a mile. A personal favorite of mine ****
If one film were to represent Film Noir, then herer's my vote! Although no shadowy, dark scenes typical in FN, one gets Robert Mitchum (Mr. Cool, calm, & collected) AND Jane Greer in a movie that's entertaining througout.
