Tonight's broadcast was the first time I'd ever heard of this landmark film in the fantasy genre. It was well written and all the players handled the material well. I agree with the last reviewers remarks that the romance between the two principal characters is secondary to this dark fantasy about the ambiguity of time. Howard's character felt out of touch with the 20th century with the high tech violence that made WWI possible. He longs for the simplicity and gentility of the 18th century. But traveling to that time he finds 20th century technology replaced with18th century bigotry, superstition and ignorance, the flip side of the coin. Once again he finds himself out of place and isolated, save for the the love interest. In the end he is depressed because he realizes that no matter who or where we are, we are ultimately alone in the world.Hope TCM broadcasts Berkeley Square again sometime in the near future.

Absolutely love this movie! The whole mood of the movie is eerie, and gives pause to all those who ever wanted to "go back in time." The romance to me is secondary to the whole mood and concept of the film, but that is just my opinion. One of the first time travel films. Howard gives a great performance as the otherwise aloof man obsessed with the history of his new house. Would have loved to have seen him do it on Broadway. WHY is this not out on DVD???
