FULL SYNOPSIS

Although professional golfer Mike Banning has been inactive for over 5 years, he takes a job as assistant pro at the El Presidente Country Club to help pay the gambling debt of his old friend Doc Brewer. His presence immediately arouses the interest of two aggressive women--Angela Barr, a wealthy socialite, and Cynthia, the wife of top pro Jonathan Linus. Banning, however, finds himself attracted to social director Carol Lindquist, unaware that she is Linus' mistress and a widow with a young daughter. After Banning learns that Cynthia helps her father, J. Pallister Young, cheat at poker, he blackmails Young into staging a "calcutta," a special tournament with an enormous cash prize. The leading partners in the match are Banning and Richard Tyson (Young's nephew), who are opposing Young and caddy Chris Patton. Before the tournament, Patton's resentment of Banning's position in the club results in a fist fight, and Patton ends up with a broken wrist. He is replaced by Linus, who attempts to disqualify Banning by pointing out that he once tried to throw a match; Young, however, has learned from Cynthia that Linus had framed Banning, and so the calcutta takes place on schedule. Banning and Tyson win, and Banning leaves his share of the money to pay for Doc Brewer's debt; he then leaves the country club, hinting to Carol that he may send for her and the child.
