After seeing the film "Awakenings" I didn't know very much about this disease, but seeing and understanding are two different things: First of all the film designates a history of the illness. It has occurred to me that this is one of the hardest disease to cure. The actors did a very good job in this film. Lastly, through some research of my own, I am beginning to understand this illness.

No movies have affected me as Awakenings has. Straight to the heart from beginning to end. The story is tragic, yet Life and love prevail. Leonard understands what is happening to him and demands to have all on film for research. Robert DeNiro is Leonard, tics, gait and never wavering in his portrayal. Robin Williams is heartbreaking as the doctor, forceful, though fighting to hold Leonard and the other patients in their new found life, realizing he cannot keep them from reverting back. To watch Leonard's awakening, struggles to cope with his life and feeling the need to protect the others from fear of becoming living statues, brought tears of hope, loss, and joy of a dance in the arms of a woman. I hope he and the others remembered.

Oustanding performances by DiNero / Williams / Miller, et al - superb casting all around. Evocative storyline . This film is a tribute to Dr. Sacks in its insight and compassion, and to the magnificent book of the same title, and a "must see" for DiNero fans and Penny Marshall proponents.
