Hugo is a scientist and photographer who is experimenting with lighting when he discovers the existence of a demon called the Asphyx, who the ancient Greeks believed came at the moment of death to take the soul away. When the Asphyx appears in his lab to take soul of a guinea pig, Hugo captures the demon. Realizing that the guinea pig will never die, Hugo believes that he has found the key to his own immortality and begins to experiment with human subjects.
