Classic performance

There is very little to find fault with in this 40s screen update of Tolstoy's classic story. Vivien Leigh is near perfection as the titular character. The part mirrors the adulteress she played in 'Lady Hamilton/That Hamilton Woman' a few years earlier, also by Korda. I think what makes this role different is its relationship to the elements that surround her: the scenes of train journeys in winter to and from Russia; and the warm weather and grandeur of a summer spent in Venice. The supporting players are also very effective and give Leigh much to emote and play off. The scene where Anna broke in to see her son who had been told she died was excellent. But the single greatest aspect of this film is the inner journey this character takes. It is a very harrowing confrontation of one's fate and delivered bravely as only this classic actress could.

This is one of the best Viven Leigh movie, after Gone With the Wind. The story, photography and Viven Leigh acting are perfect.

This is my favorite Vivien Leigh film. Her acting is superb, the costumes are elegant, casting is wonderful. There is truly nothing to criticize in this film. Watch this once and it will certainly become one of your top choices.
