J. D. Gibbons, president of the Eagle Cigarette Co., threatens to end his account at the Mark Turner Advertising Agency when he learns that his company is being sued for $500,000. Female account executive Jean Wells explains to Gibbons that the lawsuit will be settled for only $50,000, but will provide over $1,000,000 worth of publicity. In gratitude, Gibbons takes Mark and Jean out to a nightclub, where Jean learns that she has a rival for Mark's affection in nightclub performer Val Stevenson. The next day, Mark tells Jean that he and Val are engaged, so, in order to arouse his jealousy, Jean tells him that she is also engaged. When she begins suffering from depression after losing Mark and quitting her job, Jean goes to see misogynistic physician Bill H. Perry. She coerces Bill into pretending to be her fiancé, but when the couple goes out with Mark and Val, the physician's attentions are fully directed to the nightclub singer. As they are leaving the nightclub, Jean is mistaken for Bill's wife by three of his love-sick patients, and their "secret marriage" is announced by the papers the next day. Jean then goes on a shopping spree and charges everything to Bill. He, in turn, goes to her apartment to demand his "husband's rights." As the two wrestle, they are unexpectedly visited by Mark and Val, who have come by to announce their elopement. Later, the newlyweds' honeymoon in Niagara Falls is interrupted, when Mark is forced to make an emergency business trip to Chicago to meet with Gibbons. Val returns to New York, where she learns that Jean has gone to Chicago as well. The jealous Val then goes to Reno to divorce Mark, and names Jean as co-respondent. Afraid that such a scandal will ruin his practice, Bill insists that Jean "divorce" him as well. Mark goes to Reno, where he gives Val a spanking, which leads to their reconciliation. The happy couple sends Jean a telegram with the good news, and upon the advice of Willie, her maid, Jean sets her sights on Bill. Before they can get a "divorce," Jean and Bill are married by a justice of the peace. Afterward, the two admit that they love each other and decide to honeymoon in Niagara Falls as well, the Niagara Falls Honeymoon Cottages, that is.
