Underrated...
- Dave Patterson
- 10/17/12
When this film showed at TCM it was my first opportunity to view it. I observed the cast and plot-line and was surprised to see that the critics panned it. Turner is known more as a femme fatale, but I thought it was refreshing and interesting to see he as a "super-woman": gorgeous, funny, affectionate and courageous. The Anne Baxter character was considered a bit wooden, but although her character was not necessarily good theatre it was more complex in it's understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed the swimming scene by the ruins...very picturesque and original. Not a five-star, but certainly a four!

Where were they in Europe before D-Day?

Something is missing in the story. Too predictable, Anne Baxter not very interesting character, Clark Gable just O.K. John Hodiak was the best actor in this story and Lana Turner was just being pretty. War stories are full of men overseas falling in love with their nurses. Nothing unusual about this story. Sorry, script lacks true pathos.

This is one of my alltime favorite movies that Clark did with Lana Turner and so well done. John Hodiak is incredible in this film in drawing out the human side of Clark's character. It has an incredible cast and is very well written. It shows the difficulties of re-entry to home after wartime and being a military brat I watched my father and my brothers go through this, Clark lost the love of his life and went into the service so he has a lot to bring to this role and it shows. Anne Baxter was also very good in her role as the wife waiting at home.

Clark Gable gives a moving performance in this movie. You can see his real life experiences affect his work bringing a depth to his acting skills. He and Lana Turner made a great screen team.
