Sensational yet serious
- Jeff Boston
Great speeches throughout this political pic that gives you an inside look at a congenial yet cutthroat business. Oddly, too often the score does not jibe with what's happening onscreen. Laughton is laudable and Pidgeon perfect.
Hank's Salute,Laughton's Film
Summer Under The Stars tribute to Fonda, reason I watched was to see Laughton in action, and he delivered,as usual.Too bad it was his final film,he was the great one, like Jackie Gleason.
"He will follow a policy of appeasement"
- Jeff Boston
With mere days before the 2012 presidential election, "Advise and Consent" showed me a Mormon who had a fling with a homosexual and a Chicagoan who flirted with communism as young men. Those choices were long condemned and hidden by the two in this fifty-year-old film. Today such sympathies are condoned by more than a smitten few in filmdom. Some notable lines in this political pic, including one character offering the perpetual platitude that communism would come about not by force, but when our principles become outworn.
Here we are as a nation, just 11 days until the Presidential Election, and this film could not be more timely! Watching the machinations of both parties within the Senate in this film, underscores how very volatile politics really are. The acting here could not be better, with Henry Fonda and Walter Pigeon leading the cast and Charles Laughton stealing the entire film. A very young Don Murray is well cast as a Senator with one indiscretion in his background and that one thing is ferreted out and used against him in such a way that it drives him to suicide. I believe we fail to realize how very important it is that we choose the right candidates when we vote. As Walter Pigeon's character says to the Senator who dug up the dirt on Don Murray's character: "Fortunately, our country manages to survive "patriots" like you!" Very fortunate indeed! Do see this film. It will forever color how you vote!
Advise & Consent
- Dashiell Barnes
An overlooked political drama from Preminger. Ensemble cast does excellent work, particularly Meredith who won the National Board of Review award for his brief performance. The lengths the senators go to to defeat a controversial politician is exaggerated & the film deals with homosexuality. Still, this is an engaging story with great acting. I give it a 4/5.
Ah1 The good old days
- Jack The Hat
Back in the forties you didn't have a chance for public office if you were divorced and if you were Gay,it was off to the gallows with you. That"s when this country considered moral issues to be inportant. Ah! the good old days
Advise & Consent (1962)
- James Higgins
Exceptional political drama, expert direction from Otto Preminger is a plus, and the cast is an amazing mix of great actors. Henry Fonda stands out, and of course Charles Laughton is amazing. He always is.
The best political Movie of all time.
- Jason Reichenberg
This movie tells about the political climate in 1962 and it can tell us something about our political climate in 2008. A must for anybody voting in this year's presidential election. And one more thing, only Preminger could do this film, becuase it was truly ahead of it's time.
