It's OK, but if you like this sort of thing, you should see "Stranger Than Paradise" instead, Jim Jarmusch's quirky 1984 new age cinema masterpiece. Same offbeat cinematography, same low key dead pan humor, but much funnier and a lot less preachy than this.

Charming and intelligent, this is something of a sleeper that will gently pull you in and remain in your thoughts long after the credits have ended. Contrary to what some others have written, the acting and and direction are both strong. My only complaint is with TCM's decision to air it in a pan and scan format. Long shots of the beautifully minimalistic landscape are sadly compromised. I was so impressed with this film I intend on buying the DVD (widescreen).

QUIET, SOMBER, A LITTLE SAD, AND AT TIMES, FUNNY. A WONDERFUL "LITTLE FILM" THAT CAN BE APPRECIATED FOR IT'S LOOK AT PEOPLE AS INDIVIDUALS, AS OPPOSED TO SOME STERETYPE BASED ON NATIONALITY OR RELIGION...BASIC, SPARSE ENGLISH DIALOGUE, AT TIMES SUPPLEMENTED BY ARABIC OR HEBREW, ALONG WITH THE SPARSE PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS, ACTUALLY ADD TO THE MOVIE, SINCE THE VIEWER CAN FOCUS ON, AND IDENTIFY WITH, THE CHARACTERS AS JUST "PLAIN, EVERYDAY PEOPLE" WITH "PLAIN, EVERYDAY DESIRES, NEEDS, AND HURTS." DON'T EXPECT ANY BIG MOMENTS...JUST QUITE A FEW LITTLE, AT TIMES POIGNANT, ONES.

The lack of talk in this movie is gripping. You have to watch it, look at the faces, the characters. What a terrific selection of actors. Not much happened by chance in this film. It was well planned. They were not asked to say a lot but the way they looked was more important. The sultry tone of Dina's voice, her sexuality, her crude manners, the way her clothes fit, everything. It is truly art. Also very interesting to consider how people can be drawn together despite differences in their lives, upbringing, religion and government. There were so many other facets to the story, relationships between characters, governments, that were just touched on. I felt like we ran out of time. Hmmm, maybe that was the intention. Eran?

Slow, pedantic, and clearly not a meaningful political satire on Israeli-Arab relations. The actors are amateurs, the dialogue is wooden, and the direction is comparable to Sam Remy immitating Jean-Luc Godard.
