  • Lovely Film

Though the word "lovely" isn't usually associated with a John Garfield film, Dust Be My Destiny really is lovely. There are several very touching moments, especially as Joe discovers that there really are kind people out there, people who are willing to give him a chance. Those moments bring tears to my eyes.In my opinion, John Garfield was a truly amazing actor---really one of the best and quite under-rated. Always fantastic as the cynical, misunderstood man with a chip on his shoulder, Mr. Garfield is completely wonderful in this movie...as is Priscilla Lane. The chemistry between Garfield and Lane is great; of course, they had already worked together in 2 other films, so perhaps they were just comfortable with one another. At any rate, they were wonderful together here, and the life and vulnerability they brought to their characters, made me really care about both of them. The supporting cast, which includes the always-delightful Alan Hale, is terrific as well.

  • Priscilla Lane's movie, too.

This is Priscilla Lane's movie, too. She is great. She takes the chance that he will still love her and that he will be vindicated when she turns him in to the police. She gambles it all--for him, for love. She has great courage and a faith in her husband and in a hope that never dies. We just give up on it sometimes and she won't let her husband give up on it--it's doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do--even when it is so hard to do. Powerful movie. John Garfield and Priscilla Lane are often paired as a couple and are great with one another. They seem very real. Great supporting cast, too.

Again.,Garfield,as the lost and mixed up cynic, who cannot find his destiny. But in the end the rescilliancy, and determination of the human spirit triumphs.Garfield is the epitome of this genre.I absolutely love Percilla Lane. The supporting cast is superb. The present generation, needs to understand that morals are never dated, and what tough times really are.
