    The music's great, the writing and direction aint. Robert Rossen's dialogue is warmed over Odets meets "Petrified Forest," while Anatole Litvak has absolutely no flair for the moody, corrupt world of noir. Settings that other, better noir directors, like Ray or Ulmer, would have inhabited with menace and tension, like a boxcar or a seedy nightclub, are pretty much "blah" in Litvak's insensitive hands. As for the acting, it's mostly awful. A previous reviewer admits as much when she called Betty Field as "over the top," but then inexplicably adding that "it works." Well, guess what? It doesn't. It only draws attention to Ms Field's crappy acting rather than the tramp/moll character she's playing, a character Claire Trevor did about a thousand per cent better in her noirs. As for Priscilla Lane, she's a good singer (if indeed that was her voice. Sounded dubbed to me) with the personality of a handi wipe. Richard Whorf is similarly underwhelming and Elia Kazan is actually obnoxious. Good thing he chose to go behind the camera where he could combine obnoxiousness with talent. About the only decent performances come from Jack Carson (as usual) and Lloyd Nolan. Give it a C 'cause of the music, especially the title song delivered by imprisoned African Americans.

    This film has it all. It's campiness and vampy star Betty Field make this film a keeper. It ran during the 31 Days of Oscar because "This Time the Dream's on Me," was nominated for Best Song. I was totally drawn into this film because of it eclectic cast including one of the kids from the Dead End kids, Jack Carson and even a role with Elia Kazan as one of the band members. How did such a profound director like Kazan come from being such a geeky actor? This film has characteristics of a musical Film Noir, with all the shadows and a cast with the exception of the band members (actually laughable but entertaining). I found it quite engaging.

    Fascinating mix of film noir, musical, drama and touches of comedy. The music is amazing, fine performances, especially the supporting cast. Great cineamtography, well edited

    One of the best things in this movie is Betty Field. She is so over the top and it works.
