NOTES

powered by AFI

This film's working title was Omoo. An opening foreword, attributed to quoting Herman Melville, states: "January 15 1879. In all my adventures throughout the world none were as amazing as the fantastic trip I made to the South Seas in the summer of 1874. I had heard about native curses and the native tabu but never believed in them until I actually saw with my own eyes how it affected the lives of those people who were with me on that never-to-be-forgotten trip. This is the story of the Omoo Tabu and The Shark God." Although the film's credits read "Based on the novel by Herman Melville," except for its South Seas locale and maritime adventure theme, the film bears no resemblance to Melville's semi-autobiographical novel.
