Ten-year-old Arturo, a motherless Peruvian boy, moves in with his uncle Felipe when his father is unjustly imprisoned for theft. Arturo has a pet burro, which Felipe sells, using the money to buy drink and food rather than hire a lawyer for Arturo's father. Arturo finds his burro, but it is injured by a rabid puma and is put to death. A reckless truckdriver, the man responsible for his father's false arrest, nearly strikes Arturo. Eventually Arturo obtains evidence that frees his father; and his happiness is complete when the village priest presents him with another burro.
