Robert Gordon wants Donald, his son, to marry Sir Ralph Fisher's sister, but Donald loves Alice, a working-class girl, and weds her in secret. When the wealthy Mr. Gordon finds out about the marriage, he disinherits Donald, but before leaving home, Donald takes from the family safe stocks left to him by his mother. Deep in gambling debt, Sir Ralph tries to steal some money from the open safe but is caught by the butler, who procures a confession and uses it for blackmail. While looking for work in another town, Donald hears that his father has entered his horse in the prestigious "Suburban" race and has bet heavily on it. Worried, Donald returns home and discovers that Sir Ralph and the Gordon jockey are conspiring to throw the race. The jockey is replaced, the race is won, and after the butler is found murdered by Sir Ralph and his confession is revealed to Mr. Gordon, the family is reunited.
