FULL SYNOPSIS

While checking his cattle, John Preston discovers that forty head are missing. As he rides away, he is killed in an ambush and the local ranchers decide to seek revenge on the Benson family, whom they believe are responsible for Preston's death. As the vigilantes, including Flash Burdue, who speaks excitedly of wiping them out, discuss their plans, Sally, the daughter of rancher Sam Griswold, who is in love with Muley Kid Benson, overhears them and rushes to the Benson ranch to warn the family of the impending danger. Muley manages to get his family across the border into Mexico before the ranchers arrive. He tells the group that the man who accused his family of the Preston murder is a liar, and when Flash pulls a gun, Muley shoots him in the earlobe, which he explains is the Muley brand. He leaves town after telling Sally that he is going away for a long time but will someday return for her. Five years later, after reading a newspaper advertisement begging him to return, Muley, assuming that the ad was placed by Sally, returns to the Griswold ranch. He is met on the trail by Sally, who informs him that the Preston ranch has a new owner who has blocked off all access to the neighboring watering holes and has destroyed most of their stock. The two part company and that evening, as Muley is searching for information, he sees Sally talking to Flash, whom he does not recognize because of Flash's disguise. Flash has lured Sally away from her ranch hoping that her father will follow after her so he can kill him and then force Sally to marry him. Slats, Flash's foreman, captures Muley and Sam as prisoners. Seeing the two men, Flash removes his disguise and boasts of having murdered Preston himself, then promises to take revenge on Muley having shot his ear. Flash attempts to kill both Muley and Sam, but his attempt fails and he and Muley fight. As they struggle, the sheriff arrives and demands to know if Muley intends to start a range war. Muley replies that the war is over, and he and Sally embrace. He then explains that he returned to the ranch because of the advertisement, which he now knows was placed by Flash in order to lure him into a trap. Sally, shocked to hear this, tells him that although she did not place the ad, she would be happy if he would stay with her.
