J. D. Hamilton and Charlie Williams skip town when the district attorney learns they have been selling bad stock in their Consolidated Gold Mining Corp. When they meet young Billy Heath, who has run away from his home in Chesterville, Charlie decides to capitalize on the community of veterans there and J. D. convinces Billy to return home. When Billy's widowed mother Louise posts their bail after they are falsely arrested for stealing their secretary's dog, J. D. quickly falls for her. At the Heath Hotel, J. D. breaks his partnership with Charlie, and when Louise receives an offer for her land from Mr. Martin, J. D. raises her selling price and ends up purchasing the property himself. J. D.'s seeming interest in the property causes Martin's boss Grayson to believe the land is oil-filled, and he buys the adjacent property. Charlie then sets up an oil business, and J. D. makes Louise vice-president. To pay the bills, J. D. convinces Grayson to buy a half-interest in his oil field, unaware that Louise has sold the other half to the veterans. Furious to learn Charlie has used the veterans' money to cover his debts, J. D. orders him to pay the men back with Grayson's money, but they refuse it, believing they are being squeezed out of a good investment. Charlie then sells Consolidated Mine bonds to the veterans, who discover from Grayson that they are phony. The police run the partners out of town. When J. D. learns that Charlie stole the veterans' money from Louise's safe, he returns to save her reputation. In town, a mob of veterans maul J. D. and Charlie and dynamite their oil derrick, causing oil to be released just as Billy and Louise arrive. The police then inform J. D. and Charlie that gold has been discovered in their mine.
