This is wonderful film, silent or otherwise. I thought Lingyu Ruan was so lovely and captivating. Ironically, it's so tragic in that she commits suicide one year after this film was made.

Can someone tell me how this woman did not become a major international star? She reminds me of Gong Li and just as beautiful!

The Goddess is a movie that encouraged me to watch 'till the end. It was promising to see how this subject was handled in the 1930's in a country that was protected from scrutiny. It was a closed society. Seeing how they dealt with a very delicate subject matter, in the manner they did, was extremely satisfying. Very well acted and edited! It needs to be seen by more that is allowed, due to its non release status! Very upsetting to be unable to see this movie or own it!Thanks,Peter G.

I happened upon the movie about halfway thru, but was immediately immersed and hooked. After just a few moments of viewing I sensed this to be a very special piece of art. It shows the incomparable power of a mother's love for her son. Such wonderful acting by everyone in the movie. Such a beautiful and touching masterpiece. Everyone should see this. I wish I had seen it from its beginning and would buy it in a heartbeat if it was available anywhere.

This gripping, heart-wrenching drama explores contradictions between society's moral standards and basic human compassion. Despite the lack of sound, the cinematic techniques are remarkably advanced. The villain is a man, the protagonist a woman, but in the end it's not about sex, but class and politics.Like China itself, the ending is almost as far from Hollywood as can be.

I found this movie to be possibly one of the most emotonal movies ive ever seen. It can be very difficult not to cry waching this kind and gentle lady dealing with sociaty's ugly side just so her son can have a chance at a deecent life. And there is nothing more precous than to see her hold her son so lovingly. The only bad thing about this film is that the film was in such bad shape. If anyone ever asked me if this film is worth waching id say HELL YEAH!So wach it if you get the chance.
