  • Also, to this wonderful film

I also wanted to add that I loved the music and stage shows with the girls in some rather exquisite costumes. You stepped out of a dream was my favorite. I also really enjoyed the finale numbers including some re-showing of scenes from The great Ziegfeld. I also liked the specific Ziegfeld girl song with lyrics about being a Ziegfeld girl. Then Judy's line singing "with all the Ziegfeld shows and the follies of the past, you get that Ziegfeld girl that stands out from the rest," and the camera turns to Lana Turner sitting in the audience watching, and making it look like Judy was sort of referring to her singing that, and Judy and Lana did have a warm special friendship in this film. It was sad that Lana got kicked out of the follies due to her alcoholism before the finale and could only watch it. But you could see her enjoying it anyway, before she had to leave her seat and got more sick again.

  • Great Golden Ager

This film was wonderful, just like "The great Ziegfeld" with William Powell as Ziegfeld. "Ziegfeld girl" did not have Ziegfeld show himself and kept him a talked about but not shown character. I did love in this film due to three very beautiful Golden Age ladies. Hedy Lamarr, at the Ziegfeld auditions, applies to be a Ziegfeld girl while her hubby applies for the violin job playing in the orchastra for the Ziegfeld girls. She wins her position right away but her hub doesn't win his until later on while surprising her while on stage. Judy Garland, fresh out of vaudeville with dad Charles Winneger, hits it big, eventually, with the follies with her beautiful well known Judy Garland voice. Lana Turner, elevator operator turned Ziegfeld girl turned unwell alcoholic has quite the adventure of her own, as does boyfriend James Stewart truck driver turned gangster bootlegger turned reformer. Very good film.

You have Busby Berkeley designing the Ziegfield sets. You have the incomparable Adrian designing all the gowns and costuming. You have Pandro Berman directing. Good gracious, me! On top of it all, there's a great storyline brought to the screen by terrific actors of the day! If nothing else, just looking at the gorgeous Hedy Lamarr gives you an idea of what true Hollywood glamor was back in the day. Then, there is the music! Judy Garland singing "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" will bring you to tears. She was just 19 when she made this film. I saw her in concert nearly three decades later and she sang this same song. It wasn't nearly as powerful as it is when she sings it here. I've no idea if it was intentional or not but, coming on the heels of her starring in "The Wizard of Oz," her singing about rainbows again is worth noting.

  • The Origin of the Ziegfeld Showgirls.

James Stewart, Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner and Tony Martin head an all-star cast in director, Robert Z. Leonard's lavish, sumptuous musical extravaganza, which tells about how the Ziegfeld Showgirls first began, with Garland, Lamarr and Turner as three young hopefuls all vying for a chance become part of the Ziegfeld Follies. A large-scale musical drama opens brightly, but soon, bogs down into melodrama and preposterous subplots. Featuring a chorus of songs including Busby Berkeley's "You Stepped Out of a Dream", "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" and "Minnie from Trinidad". The MGM glitter has never been brighter, and it would be even more bright. If the movie had been filmed in color instead of that drab, gritty black-and-white. Also starring Jackie Cooper, Ian Hunter, Charles Winninger, Edward Everett Horton, Phillip Dorn, Paul Kelly, Eve Arden, Dan Dailey, Al Shean, Fay Holden, Felix Bressart, Rose Hobart, Bernard Nedell, Ed McNamara, Mae Busch, Renie Riano & Josephine Whittell.

This movie was totally amazing and blew me away! My favorites in this had to be Judy Garland and Lana Turner. Both their performances were outstanding, and i all-round loved it!

Well produced and certainly a better than average musical, curiously not in color though. The cast is terrific, including the supporting players. Some very good musical numbers. I could never tire of hearing Judy Garland sing, she has such an amazing voice.
