• Perfect dance film!

  Fred Astaire famously said that Rita Hayworth was his best partner and his favorite because "she danced with trained perfection and individuality." The chemistry which we never really saw between Fred and Ginger is more than evident here between Fred and Rita and, boy howdy, does it work! Their dance numbers in this film are simply tremendous and filled with complicated steps that look effortless. Many forget that Rita was a trained dancer long before she was discovered and made an actress. Fred's career had faded by the time this film came along and the pairing with Rita, whose star was ascending at the time, proved to be fateful for both of them and it completely resurrected Astaire's career while cementing Hayworth's. Toward the end of her life, Hayworth said the only jewels she had were the films she made with Astaire. Watching this film, I'd say we have a jewel here too!

• It Doesn't Get Better Than This

  One of the very best musicals ever made. A non-stop display of such dancing talent that's hard to match, along with such beautiful music and lyrics by Kern and Mercer. I notice that the trailer has a dance step in the Shorty George where Rita jumps over Fred while he's bent down that is not in the film. Also, the end scene where Rita and Fred do the samba differs from the film...some different dance steps and Rita in a different gown. Have watched the film many, many times and always enjoy it. Definitely recommend this DVD.

• You Were Never Lovelier (1942)

  This is certainly one of the best musicals to come out of the 1940's. The pairing of Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth is surprisingly effective. The score is great and contains memorable songs. Good art direction and it's nice blend of romance, music and comedy. Excellent supporting cast. Adolphe Menjou, Isobel Elsom and Xavier Cugat are all terrific.

  Fabulous music and dancing. And the script is geninely funny (due to the great actor Adolphe Menjou). There are two dance scenes between Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire. In my opinion, the "Shorty George" number is possibly the most enjoyable of any of the Astaire- with- partner dance scenes in all of his movies. And when watching it, the viewer is drawn to look mainly at Rita Hayworth, rather than Astaire. Perhaps the most overlooked element of the movie is the part played by Xavier Cugat, whose Latin band during the 1930's and 40's was certainly the most popular of all the Latin dance orchestras.

  one of fred astaire's best musicals from the 'forties, "you were never lovelier" pairs him with the lovely rita hayworth, one of his best partners and astaire's own personal favorite. the two have great chemistry together, and it's obvious just by the way fred looks at rita that he's charmed by her. most importantly, the music (by musical giants jerome kern and johnny mercer)is excellent. and the dancing...sublime. some of the most complicated choreography ever is excecuted with graceful perfection by astaire and hayworth. as with their previous film, i belive fred was thrilled that rita could match him step-for-step, no matter how complex the dance number. i highly recommend this absolutely charming musical.
