Tinker is a cynical beach photographer who has developed a foolproof system for making contacts with young women at an English seaside resort. He simply takes the picture, gets the address, and then selects the women that interest him romantically. The scheme works well until he meets Nicola, a London fashion model visiting her father at his summer home. Nicola has her own set of rules for playing the game, and, after an encounter with some of her other suitors, Tinker realizes that, although he has fallen in love with her, there is a wide gap between his rootless existence and her well-organized life. As the summer comes to an end, Nidge, one of Tinker's buddies, decides to marry his pregnant girl friend; Suzy, who had taken up with Nicola's father, is left drunk, disillusioned, and alone; and Nicola prepares to leave for a modeling job in Rome. Tinker would like to follow her but hesitates for fear that he could not compete in a large city. Although Nicola promises to see him again, Tinker realizes that it was just a brief holiday affair for her and that she has beaten him at his own system.
