Margery Huntley, an orphan working at a New York dressmaking establishment, is sent to prison after wealthy kleptomaniac Helen North places some stolen lace in Margery's handbag. Afterwards, Margery becomes a nurse, until the hospital learns about her record. Margery leaves to be a nurse in a Red Cross Emergency Hospital in Belgium, while Helen, also in Belgium to care for her invalid father, finds herself penniless after his death. While attempting to leave for California to live with her father's wealthy friend, Helen, along with other refugees, is attacked by German airships. As Margery cares for her in the hospital, a shell explodes. Thinking that Helen is dying, Margery leaves to impersonate her in California. She falls in love with Dr. Richard Carlton, a wounded Red Cross surgeon, and they are about to marry when Helen appears. Because Helen will not allow her to leave quietly, Margery denies Helen's truthful accusations until she realizes that Helen will be sent to an insane asylum. Margery then confesses, but Carlton declares that he loves her anyway.
