In a saloon, honest cowboy Jack Loomis comes to the defense of some Indians when a group of patrons attempt to get them drunk in order to cheat them out of their gold. Jack is subsequently approached by George Tully, who offers him a job as his ranch foreman. Unknown to Jack, however, Tully is the head of a gang of thieves and has only hired Jack, whom he considers gullible, as a blind. Later, Jack catches Dick, one of Tully's men, in the act of stealing gold from two Indians, Red Cloud and Grey Wolf, and after Jack intervenes, the Indians reveal that all of Tully's men are crooks and promise to help Jack if he ever needs them. At the local general store, Jack meets pretty Madge Herron, the daughter of the owner, Elmer Herron, and asks to take her out. Their flirtation is interrupted by the arrival of one of Madge's suitors, express agent Ray Keeler, who becomes jealous of Jack and picks a fight with him. Jack knocks him out and a humiliated Keeler then vows to get revenge. That evening, on the way to meet Madge, Jack happens on a robbery in progress at the express office, but the two burglars escape. Herron, who is also the town marshal, arrives to investigate and finds Keeler tied up near the empty safe. When his gag is removed, Keeler points to Jack as the thief and, due to circumstantial evidence against him, Jack is arrested. Jack then makes a daring getaway and goes to the Indians for protection, while Herron puts out a reward of $1,000 for his capture. Tully tracks Jack down and offers to protect him from the law if Jack will participate in the gang's upcoming robbery of a gold shipment. Jack carries out the robbery with Dick, but at the last minute turns the tables on him with the aid of Red Cloud and Grey Wolf. After sending the Indians into town to alert Herron and his posse, Jack heads over to Tully's ranch to stall for time, claiming that the robbery has come off without a hitch. Once there, Jack discovers that Keeler is a member of Tully's gang, and when the men move to attack him, Jack single-handedly fights them, ties them up and forces them to sign confessions. Herron and Madge arrive, and Herron makes Jack the new town marshal after which Jack and Madge embrace.
