Teddy Rutherford's ideas about war preparedness cause his pacifist fiancée, Pacifice Ford, to cast him aside for another. Vowing that he is through with women forever, Teddy embarks upon a bout of drinking that lands him in jail for disorderly conduct. Teddy awakens to find himself being nursed by the jailer's daughter Janie, which leads him to decide that his thirty-day sentence is a blessing in disguise. However, when the sheriff learns of his daughter's budding romance, he secures a pardon for Teddy, who, discovering that he is no longer a welcome caller at the jail, proceeds to lead the life of an unlawful citizen. First, he tries speeding, only to discover that he is in the wrong county and is sent to the wrong jail. This tactic failing, he impersonates an arch criminal who has a mania for blowing up munitions factories and comes very close to becoming entangled with the federal authorities when, by a strange turn of events, he captures the real criminal and out of gratitude, the sheriff consents to the marriage of his daughter to Teddy.
