A long-awaited restoration of an early epic
- Peter Bishop
- 12/7/12
A superb restoration. Has everything you'd want in an epic except the 3 hour run time. Lavish sets, melodramatic story, great German expressionist-era acting, thousands of extras, and a musical score that fits the on-screen action without being overly-powerful. Only the color tints were a little bit obtrusive.

Fabulous production and new score
- James Ward
- 12/7/12
This screenplay and production are incredible. Love the compoositional quality of shots and operatic acting. It's close in time to such big Strauss operas as Elektra and Die Frau Ohne Schatten, so I'm grateful to be taken back to the stage design of that era in the service of similar subject matter and over-the-top passions. Luebitsch obviously would have done an amazing job with Verdi's Aida, but no one would have sprung for a full length opera, even at the onset of talkies. Whoever wrote this score did a spectacular job.
