Walter Roderick conspires with Bulfinch to impersonate Hugh Argyle in order to acquire his title, fortune, and childhood sweetheart, Lady Beatrice Fair. She, however, is heavily in debt from being cheated at the gaming table and, to absolve herself, she follows the custom of marrying a condemned criminal, who turns out to be Bulfinch. But Bulfinch escapes and hides his bride when the Great Fire of London sweeps the city. Hugh reappears and rescues Beatrice, while Bulfinch is reclaimed by his deserted wife.
