Social butterfly Alma Clayton breaks her engagement with Neil Webster after she meets the much talked about criminal lawyer Wayne Burroughs and is won over by his eloquence. They marry, but after Wayne neglects Alma to further his career, Alma encourages Neil to court her again. When Alma asks Wayne, now district attorney, for a divorce, he moves to his club. Neil, who has threatened revenge against Wayne, responds to Alma's call and pleads with her to elope. At that moment, burglar Jim Sims is in Alma's upstairs room stealing her silver. He notices Wayne's silver-framed photograph and recalls that Wayne defended him successfully when he was on trial for life and could not afford an attorney. After overhearing Neil and Alma, Jim orders Alma at gunpoint to bind Neil to a chair and takes Alma into her room, where he convinces her not to leave Wayne. Meanwhile, Neil makes his way to a telephone and notifies the police. Alma gives Jim Wayne's photograph and hides him. After the police leave, Alma dismisses Neil and reconciles with Wayne.
