Terence O'Day and his daughter, Cherry, operate a gambling establishment, "The Paper Lantern," in Shanghai. She is loved by sailor Donald MacGregor, who leaves, expecting to return and marry her, and by novelist Gordon Deane, who also departs. The death of her father brings about Cherry's marriage to banker William Blaine--an unhappy union, troubled by the attentions of Harvey, her husband's clerk, who steals bank funds to buy her gifts. Meanwhile, Deane recruits Harvey and MacGregor to accompany him to a lonely lighthouse where he plans to work. When Blaine demands a divorce, Cherry consents and starts out to search for Deane; and when wrecked near the lighthouse, she is saved by Deane. A quarrel between the sailor and the clerk results in their both falling to their deaths, but Cherry and Deane return to civilization and happiness.
