During a storm off the coast of Alaska, Bennett, a brutal sea captain, forces his wife to assist his men, and she is fatally hurt in an accident. Seaman Gaylord thereupon agrees to take her child from the influence of its father. Seventeen years later, Gale ( i.e., Gaylord) is a storekeeper at Flambeau, Alaska. He has reared the child, Necia, as his daughter in ignorance of her half-caste parentage. Although she is loved by Poleon Doret, a half-breed, she falls under the influence of Lieut. Meade Burrell, a Virginia aristocrat stationed in the North. When Bennett's ship comes into the port, he reveals the truth about the girl's parentage, and Burrell is stunned. Necia resolves to leave with her brutish father without seeing Meade again. When their ship is ice-jammed, the crew deserts, but Burrell arrives over the ice, leaves the captain unconscious, and rescues Necia; Bennett is destroyed in an ice floe, and the lovers are happily united.
