According to reviews, there are flashbacks showing the early life of the bear "Toklat," as well as a twelve-minute sequence before the opening credits. The Variety review noted that the film was "reputedly based on a factual account." According to the Los Angeles Times review, Toklat was shot on location in Utah. The picture was the first release of Sun International, Inc., a Salt Lake City-based company that moved to Hollywood in 1972. Sun, which primarily distributed their pictures outside large urban areas, became known for family-oriented films and highly re-enacted documentaries made for both theatrical and television release.
