Fun early mystery. Spoilers at end.
Not the greatest movie ever, but it's fun as an early example of a talkie murder mystery when they were still trying to work out how to make them. It's certainly not boring. The main problem is the sound, which is particularly bad in outside scenes. The script needed editing- there were a lot of lines that would have been cut out now, as they transitioned from scene to scene. I had the best time laughing at some of the acting, my goodness. Fortunately we had Basil Rathbone and Roland Young, and the leading lady and sergeant were cute. I'm always happy to see my Baz as a good guy, and I thought he was fantastic, considering the clunkiness of the material. I did see the awkward pauses he made that one person noted, but other actors did that too, so I think that was a choice by the director to let the audience know what clues they were supposed to pay attention to. SPOILER PART- As for the mystery itself: It made no sense why some people didn't say what they knew, and also the culprit eliminates so many people it becomes obvious who it must be- smart! I'm not sure why the detective was considered a super sleuth with so many corpses around.
Okay Philo Entry
Basil deserves more credit given the early days of talkies. He may seem wooden, but he'd been a primarily stagy actor. He looks so FINE! in that suit, nicely shows off his physique.Quite athletic-looking.Roland Young great as usual! Most other actors seemed stage veterans, and maybe wooden, too!
The Bishop Murder Case
This film is over 80 years old. This seems more like a stage production. This was early for talkies and fun to watch. Basil Rathbome and Roland Young are terrific. I would appreciate if people would not have spoilers in their reviews for those who have not seen the films.
Great Basil Fan
Disagree that Baz was bad here.Kind of minor vehicle, but good enough. He was not bad in this,Roland Young great, glad he was good guy, wondered about him until the end.
Basil Great Detective
- Van Dine
Hubba Hubba,Basil. He did a decent turn,1st time watching it all.
Early Rathbone talkie
Not a bad entry in the "intellectual sleuth" genre, but doesn't come close to the Sherlock Homes stories. Too much talking, not enough action. Rathbone rather wooden in this - he was much better a few years later as the evil Guy of Gisborne in The Adventures of Robin Hood. The best actor in this was Roland Young!
Good little movie, good mystery, and highly enjoyable, especially if you are a Basil Rathbone fan. He is SO Good Looking, and he is a great actor! Thanks TCM, please more like this, WITH Basil Rathbone!
Early talkie for Basil fans. Not the greatest film, but love watching him act.Happy to be able to see this again, especially for Roland Young
the acting in this movie is awful. I can't believe that Basil Rathbone was so bad. I think one of the reasons is because it is so old. Mr. Rathbone would say a word then pause between the next one & then the next.
