Enjoyed Kirk,Sad Eddie Robinson
Thought this almost up to Bad And Beautiful.Loved Macready's crusty ex-agent.And getting the pipe slapped out of his mouth, how many times did his upper plate go flying? Some decent acting from co-stars,but Hamilton stinks!
Hope this airs more often
Smack goes Lew Jordan's pipe and Kirk gets a good telling off.Of the 2 Georges, loved Macready, hate Hamilton.Cyd not a nice character, why'd Jack care for her. Some ridiculous scenes, but the more mature roles were well filled and presented. Can see Bad And The Beautiful's influence.
Never noticed the airport scene with Macready getting pipe slapped out of his mouth. One of best scenes in movie his telling his client what he thought of him-and that hat!A real Tyrol,or was that a shaving brush?Good to see he and Kirk together again, always fighting those two boys!Great Edward G,but Hamilton needs to learn how to act-ask help from any of 3 mentioned real actors-Kirk,Eddie,Georgie!
Kirk & Macready At It Again
Don't care what else is said, this IS a good movie.Hamilton is meh,but the rest give good showings.
Love this underrated movie
Though there are moments of unmitigated melodrama (Claire Trevor's scenes specifically), I found this to be a gripping and striking companion piece to THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, but strong on its own merits: an acidic look at Hollywood through writers Irwin Shaw (source) and Charles Schnee (adaptor); Minnelli's pacing and visual sweep; fresh performances by the younger actors like Daliah Lavi; and a standout performance by Kirk Douglas, who gives his unsympathetic character hauntingly sensitive nuances. While David Raksin's score lifts full passages from THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL effectively, it also offers a poignant and unforgettable original theme. I worked in a different era of Hollywood for 25 years but feel this film captures the viciousness and cruelty of the industry, the excitement of moviemaking, and the tortured personalities - yet is hugely entertaining, no small feat.
Expected a lousy picture from some reviews.Kirk & Edward G do a good job.Cyd okay.Did Kirk connect when he struck Lew Jordan across the face?George's pipe sure went flying. And Jordan offered him more work in spite of that slap!Hamilton stank.
Disappointed in Kirk Douglas and Vincent Minelli
Not hard to see why it lost money.
I think the casting Cyd Charisse as the bad girl was just not what an audience wanted. You go to see Cyd Charisse for one thing...dancing. Kirk Douglas's performance was such a type cast...a victim of his own vices..His kissing scene was one of the worse. I was indulged in movies since I was two, and get my memory tickled from TCM (as one of TCM's oldest fans) remembering the movie and with whom and where I saw it. This movie I didn't remember at all, but know I saw it. Just not memorable at all to me. I didn't recognize Vincent Minelli's touch either.
Thank you for airing this movie. Also, appreciated Ben's comments after the show. A great candidate for restoration and re-edit.
One of the best films by vincente Minnelli
I think Two weeks in another town is a great film. It is set in a lovely city (Rome)and has many good actors/actress'. The car chase at the end is gripping. This is one of Kirk Douglas' best movies and is one of my favourites.
