An epic adaptation of Henri Charriere's autobiography. McQueen & Hoffman give gripping performances, as "Papillon," where McQueen's goal is to escape from Devil's Island. Beginning as a male love story, the film turns into an adventure story, with Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-nominated score making the film a study of man vs. nature; while Schaffner's direction makes the French Penal system a gritty hell. A powerful film, that sometimes drags. I give it a 4.5/5.

I read this book many years ago around the same time the film arrived and it rains one of the finest portraits of the Indominitable human spirit. McQueen is the perfect foil for the masochistic guards and Hoffman is great as the pitable prisoner helping McQueen to escape. What made the movie so great for me is the lesson that no man can be beaten until he allows himself to give in. It's a mist see and in my humble opinion one if the greatest films made.

This movie is a must-see for Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman fans. I have not seen it in years and my husband has never seen it. It is a great movie, so please?
