  • Burt Reynolds at his best

Burt Reynolds is cast as a disgraced pro quarterback who is fed up with his gold-digger girlfriend. He escapes a potentially disastrous relationship by pushing her around and taking a joy ride in her Maserati. This lands him in trouble with the law and a quick trip to prison. He soon realizes that prison is not a walk in the park and there is brutality at every turn. The prison's sadistic warden (Eddie Albert) wants a tune up game for his semi-pro football team made up entirely of the prison's guards. Reynolds makes up a team of the most dangerous cons in the joint for this tune up game "The Mean Machine." The guards see the game as a joke, but the cons see it as a way to regain their self respect and to get revenge on the guards.

There is no denying there are some very funny scenes, particularly the cheerleaders, and it is a very entertaining movie. Even Burt Reynolds is good. Good score, great editing. Fun!
