Sandoval's early music career was stifled in Cuba, where he was forced to play in state-run orchestras, but he chose to stay because of his passionate love for his wife, Marianela, an ardent Castro supporter. His devotion to jazz was validated by a chance meeting with Dizzy Gillespie, who would later become instrumental in orchestrating Sandoval's escape. He ultimately defected to the United States in 1989 during a European tour with Gillespie. He went on to win widespread critical acclaim and three Grammy awards.
