Alexandra "Coop" Cooper is one of New York's most visible prosecutors, as she heads up the high-profile sex-crimes unit. Her life is torn apart when, upon returning from a business trip, she is greeted by screaming tabloid headlines reporting her own vicious murder. Alexandra immediately knows that the victim was actually a close friend, an actress who was using Alexandra's beach home where the crime took place. Unable to ascertain whether Alexandra or her friend was the intended victim, the police assign a detective, Mike Chapman, to protect Alexandra and assist her in the search for the killer. At the same time, she is pursued by a dogged reporter, Ellen Goldman, who is determined to document the whole grisly story. As Alexandra digs deeper into the crime, she uncovers a hornet's nest of possible suspects who could have a motive to kill either woman, but she knows, too, that unless she can solve the case quickly, her own life remains in danger.
